THE ENERGY PORTAL

ENERGY: Webster’s: ability to be active: "the physical or mental strength that allows you to do things: natural enthusiasm and effort, usable power that comes from heat, electricity, etc.
PORTAL: a large door, a site serving as a guide or point of entry to the World Wide Web and usually including a search engine or a collection of links to other sites arranged especially by topic, a communicating part or area of an organism".
This morning at a meeting of the Mainstreet vision committee, we were wondering and brainstorming of how to describe our City of Oceanside. Many words and phrases were tossed about, and several came together for me like a thunderclap. Energy and Portal. That’s it Energy Portal…it’s what makes you catch your breath when walking down the sidewalk on Pacific Ave. It’s what sends vibrations of joyful intensity when you pass the young people on Coast Highway. It’s what sends shivers down your spine when you walk the Oceanside Pier and realize that you are on the Edge. Energy Portal captures what we are, who we are, and what we are doing. It captures the new revitalization of our Downtown with “beach Industrial” businesses such as the new craft beer and wine venues. This is a growth industry ideally suited to our local beach scene and will continue to flourish.
Who we are; an amazing amalgamation of ethnic, economic, educational, age groups, all of who are going through this portal of purpose each and every day. What we are, the doers, who have  seen our own visions of what is possible in this City of Opportunity come to fruition, Artists Alley, and The Oceanside Museum of Art. We are doing amazing things. Bringing new businesses into the City, creating new venues for the most sought after element in what draws us together, The Arts. Working together to help our Community’s citizens to be aware and collaborate to bring new solutions to our Environmental challenges. Oceanside leads the way in making our City a leader in sustainable goals.
We are now bringing  a new element of energy which knows no constraints, The Arts. The infusion into our Downtown of this driving economic element is becoming a force to be reckoned with. With the opening of the First Museum ever for the art genre of murals, The Art Miles .a project of the Muramid Museum will bring new energies into our region. International players in the Arts focusing on Peace will be a catalyst for change, bringing many new visitors in Artists Alley which will in turn have a ripple effect on the whole of Downtown.
ENERGY PORTAL: Our daily gift of being, living, and working here in this electric energizing wave of the future in tune with our neighbor to the west, The Pacific Ocean, which brings us her gifts from sea. Clean air, waves to conquer, food to eat, and most of all the soft sweet vibrant sounds of the endless waves…through this portal everyday, we are endowed with energy.

ELENA'S FRENCH CREPE CAFE

ART comes to us in many different genres... It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I introduce to Oceanside and beyond a new and tasty adventure in gastronomic fulfillment. The opening of Elena's French Crepe's Café located at the corner of Oceanside's Artists Alley and 511 Pier View Way.* The new business is owned by Elena and Hassan El Sharkawy.

Elena is the most charming and energetic woman I have met in a very long time. She is a painter and has many stories to tell of her journey's across this world. She is now embarking upon a new adventure in the opening of her Café in the heart of Oceanside's Arts and Theatre district.

Hassan is also an artist. Retired from oral surgery the owner of dental clinics in Egypt, he has journeyed to America to start his new life as a painter/sculptor and co-owner of Elena's Café. Together, they are part of  the wondrous International makeup of our City of Oceanside. The dynamic energy they bring will welcome You and will give you the flavor of tastes from the Old World melding into the New World of Cooking Arts for our City of Oceanside and beyond.

"In France, cooking is a serious art form and a national sport". Julia Child

In Oceanside we now have Elena making her art form for You and for Me !

FOUAD TAWFILIS

A Magnificent Presence. He was in our City of Oceanside. He and his talented wife Joanne, brought the Muramid Mural Museum to Artists Alley and so to the world. The first Mural Museum in the world to be founded and given life in an Alley which has seen the arts brought to a new and inspiring level in Oceanside.

A world traveler of peace and unbridled love for all Fouad was a unique force of energy, talent, love and an unending source of giving, us a new perspective of what love is all about.

In spite of the many health issues he had to contend with, he was always upbeat about what the next day, the next project, or the next possibility for what the art world could bring to us all. Love, Peace and Happiness were his priorities. He never wavered.

I do know this...He would say to me and all of You,

"Well what are we going to do today?  What new project are you going to give to the world, and how soon can we get started? I'm way ahead of you, so try if you can to catch up and show me your vision. You Can Do It..."

This is what he would say to all of us.

The Horse Power Project

My earliest drawing passion were Horses. Always the hero in my summer reading as a fourth grader were in the Zane Grey books along with All of the Black Stallion books by Walter Farley. With my math book propped up on my desk as a school girl, I drew horses and forever was the problem child for my teachers....of course there were Black Beauty and Thundehead. Later came my history heroes and their horses as exemplified by Bucephalus.

With my childhood passions still intact, I go to the race track to "see" the Horse. The race of course is thrilling and another story in and of it's self, but it is the component I don't need. My need is the Horse. In the paddock, I watch the approach of the great ones. As they pass by, the eye meets mine, and we speak.
I remember Magnum, a great dark bay who paused by the paddock rail, and we had the conversation of expectation. He who runs, and I who love. That's all I really need and my day is complete.

"Horse Power" is in our lexicon in so many ways in our western culture... I often wonder how we would express the power of a modern car in terms other than Horse Power. These drawings are about the Horse Power which is inherent in the gaze of a Horse. The sweet glance of the mare towards her foal, the experimental gaze of the young colt, the magnetic  power of the stallion waiting for the acknowledgment of his worth, the loyalty of "Sergeant Reckless".

Some of our connections through words:
Horse sense, Hold your Horses, Wild Horses couldn't keep me, Cart before the Horse, Horse Power, Pony Cars, Horse of a different color, Horsing around, Horse Hair, Horse feathers, lead a horse to water but, Horse Play, death rides a Pale Horse, Pony tail, shank ponies, there are many more as found on Google. http://www.lrgaf.org/guide/equestrian_terms.htm

These drawings were created in the beloved "Art Building" in Artists Alley Oceanside. It is here that the painting 'Kublai Khan' was painted and the little bronze sculpture series  the "Cloud Dancers" came to life.

INSTEAD OF FENCES

click on grey image for larger view

This is what our Fountain Area looks like today and for the past two years it has been fenced off and sits there looking like a "dead zone" which on one can enter. The Council is waiting for the Rains to come and help with filling these"iconic" fountains. This plaza could be a "Social Commons" which would be a place to read, play chess, and have a coffee. Instead, visitors look at it and say, why?

Our Citizens Communities, have been tasked to save water and put in natural climate friendly landscaping. Why can't Our City Leaders have the sensible outlook for their own City Hall Complex. Putting in fake grass sends the message that Oceanside is seeking the most cost effective way to deal with the problem of climate change. Our Citizens deserve better, much better!

Before Pope Francis arrived at the UN, a “Mural of HOPE for Pope Francis” designed and created by Master Muralist and Peace Paint Ambassador Cecelia Linayo and
students from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School in Vista, California was on display in the UN Correspondents Association (UNCA) Clubroom.

According to Joanne and Fouad Tawfilis, founders of the Art Miles Mural Project, “over the past week, students worked with Cecelia to create a beautiful image of the
Pope, with a lot of love and messages of peace for their namesake, St. Francis of Assisi.“

CAMARADA AT OMA PRESENTS VIVALDI
OCTOBER 20

OUR VISION
In the quest to create refreshing artistic experiences, Camarada seeks dynamic musical repertoire and fearlessly blends diverse artistic elements to present programs that are approachable, uplifting and stimulating.

Camarada is dedicated to presenting invigorating performances of musical masterworks. Established in 1994, Camarada concerts share the joy of chamber music by pairing performers of the highest caliber with intimate spaces throughout San Diego. Original founders Beth Ross-Buckley, Ann Chase and Mary Barranger had a vision of concert experiences that are inviting and engaging for audiences. In 2008 Travis Maril and Dana Burnett joined Beth Ross-Buckley as Co-Artistic Directors continuing this tradition. All three have significant chamber music experience and bring to Camarada a renewed zest for intimate chamber music, collaborating with a variety of artists, commissioning music by American composers and recording projects.

UPDATE ...

Good morning!  .sharing this beautiful image...this mural was supposed to be done between St. Mary's School in India and St. Francis of Assisi School in Vista....but the Indian children couldn't stop themselves from painting a whole canvas....The theme is "Peace and the Environment."  The school in Vista will do another one and we will ensure that both will be delivered to NYC UN for presentation to the Pope.

Amazing work as all murals are that come from the hearts and passion of the world's children.

My Good Hello to All who read this blog and it is heartwarming to know that you are readers from all over our World. From time to time I post stories or images by others who have great and wonderful stories to share. Sometimes, the stories are joyful, other times the stories are sadly poignant   about the state of our world and those who are struggling to survive. Yet even these stories had an art element which comes from the souls of those who write there stories with their lives...this is such a story.
Ruth Jameson

WATER BABIES, WOMEN AND WAR
We’ve all seen the photos of the 3 year old child, whose 5 year old brother and their Mother from Syria drowned in the Mediterranean trying to reach safety on the European shore.  This has become the image and poster of only one of the many “WATER BABIES” floating face down and washing ashore.
Somewhere amidst them are the women---the Mothers, sisters, aunties, grandmothers with their lifeless bodies drift along the waves that crest and fall, the surf making curling lines along the shore, sometimes seeming like dancing and floating the women to and fro.  Their silenced bodies and long dresses, shoeless feet bobbing and rising to the top of those waves, until they too wash ashore as the tide gently leaves them in muddy puddles along the shoreline in jagged lines of death.  They remain there until someone pulls them from that shore or until the tides return again that may or may not drag them back out to the darkened waters, often carrying them far away and never to be seen again.
Somewhere along the drylands, the highlands, the world turns their faces away from these images working hard to erase the thought of such gruesome and inhumane deaths caused by people who used the war machines that burst into cities, towns and villages while people sleep, and while soldiers and so called freedom fighters, burn, rape and pillage, terrorizing those who somehow manage to survive the continuous marauding evilness of violence and war.
And SOMEHOW it is the WOMEN who do survive these endless wars, violence and persecution that make them refugees, not migrants forcing them to flee on foot crossing incomprehensible dangers caused by those war machines through deserts, landmine fields, snipers, grenades and all without food or water, carrying their children on their backs and having to leave all their belongings behind again and again.  There are over 43 million “refugees” in the world today and according to “CARE” almost 50% of the world’s forcibly displaced people are CHILDREN.
It isn’t just WATER BABIES near oceans and the seas, from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and African Nations—it’s also WATER BABIES from Haiti, the Philippines, Pakistan, Nepal, Cuba and Latin America.  And it isn’t just the war machines that have resulted in WATER BABIES whose young lives have been lost; in the past two decades they have become victims of floods, tsunamis, hurricanes, and typhoons that are unparalleled in our history of lives lost to the rages of Mother Nature.  These situations are a different kind of war, one where human rampages of waste and maltreatment of our earth has begun to take its toll of those we love and treasure the most—our children.

And yes, it is the predominately the survivors, the WOMEN of WAR that was the genesis of how the Art Miles Mural Project has evolved, based on centuries of suffering children of war and the River Drina in Bosnia Hercegovina.  Books have been written spanning about four centuries starting with the Ottoman Empire, the Austro-Hungarian rule and a socialist domination of the region riding herd on the lives, destinies and relations of the local populations of Muslims and Orthodox Christians living in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
It was there that I learned the history of the River Drina and a famous story of how the children were  taken to the banks of the river and separated from their Mothers who were left crying and wailing on the shore.  Throughout the tumultuous history ruled by royalty and conflict, that I arrived on the scene following the July 1995 genocide of more than 7,000+ men that disappeared in two days.  To Fouad and my dismay, the world is now filled with these millions of REFUGEES and displaced persons.
The Art Miles Story will describe the heroic, heartbreaking and horrific--sometimes fatal experiences of women’s challenges of surviving these wars and conflicts around the world, beginning in Bosnia-Hercegovina. Nearly twenty years of interactions with women who have crossed these oceans, seas, rivers and lakes, seeking asylum and safety at such great risks will not be just another documentary, but a riveting true accounting of survival and the anguish of losing their “water babies” throughout the world and how stretches of simple canvas fabric painted by hands of children and people of all ages throughout the world, by people of all ages from over 100 countries has managed to bring communities together.  Murals painted by victims and survivors have been able to express themselves in a creative and healing method serving as a “catharsis” that soothed their aching souls.  And painting murals by community members throughout the world to send messages of hope and cheer, sharing their grief in some way, has given this project HOPE—a HOPE that humanity is still populated by good people who crave peace, who together through collaboration, team building and building consensus have tried to support a Culture of Peace versus a Culture of War.
This collection of more than 4,000 murals and the people who witnessed the loss of their children, family members and friends to WAR and survived have transported their pain and memories onto canvas and the world community has responded by painting images of hope and cheer from the hearts of humanity that still exists no matter how dismal it seems.  This visual documentation of modern history, and the expressions of human emotion represents a living hope that will carry humanity forward.

EMERGENCE: IMAGINATION UPWELLING

The Most basic element in the Artist’s toolbox is Imagination. To dream - to stare out of the mind’s window and see a new possibility, to have the vision move internally and emerge into an actual concrete work - is the impetus for the maker of Art.

The scientific community has accepted that Imagination is the foundation of the possible. The opening symposium for the Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination at UCSD validated my long held belief that  when we stare into the void of nothingness and see a light of pure thought, we as human beings create our world of wonder and our world of tragedy.  * In other words, when I see a problem or opportunity which is there for improvement, something happens in the brain that is goes into overdrive in a kaleidoscope of possible images and then coalesces into a tangible visual form. My point: that for me, if I see a possible change, then I go forward with visual sketches until it becomes a complete vision. The void becomes the possible…

Imagination is the wellspring that brings into reality all that we behold in today’s world of new technologies that were thought of as magic only a few decades ago.

With the visions of Imagination comes the Upwelling of energy that is the driving force of the creative process, which is the most inexplicable of the three stages of my work. Often I look back after the emergence of work into reality and wonder from whence it came. Many refer to this as the creative “muse”; but I think of it as the crucible pour - unstoppable, fierce and deathly hot in its force. The molten energy must enter the mold and one hopes that the mold will not break.

Emergence into the real world from the Upwelling is the dynamic flow of energy creating a feeling of timeless euphoria. Time stops, the world shrinks, and the hand writes, molds, and mixes our chosen media of self to share our innermost dreams, hopes and aspirations. The effort brings into Emergence a revelation of who we are.
