Today is the first day of a new Administration of our Nation. We have hope that the tried and true way of communication of truth to our People will give us a way to come together once more and be proud of our National ethos...

Last week the tried way of creating my art works are evolving to the digital more than ever. With my hands of 85 years becoming shaky and having a life of their own, the Wacom Pad and stylus give me back my control of the images in my minds eye to come to realization. The Canvas and the gleaming Oils, will always be my hearts desire, but time marches on and the hands need the comfort of the digital help. Of course, the creative process is the same. Computers don't make the image, but rather give me the ability to bring the images to life.

In this new day of beginnings, for our Country and the Artists who give us inspiration and hope, I will use whatever way I can to bring the new and the hope to fruition. May our American People do the same to give us all the inspiration and hope for a new future with grace and dignity...

The Year 2020 and ZOOM

What has this year given to the Arts? Theaters are closed as are the Museums, Galleries, and Outdoor venues such as our Internationally Famous Artists Alley. This year has made it more intensive, and innovative in our approach to create, and participate in the Arts. The Challenge has been for me as an artist to wonder if it is all for naught. For the isolation from my usual gatherings and art groups has been daunting and depressing. 

Alone in the Studio, I work on, realizing that I'm one of the lucky ones that really has my own thing which no Pandemic can take from me. The time is spent, and I have a product, one which does not need a store, or venue to make it happen. Therefore, why the depression? Throughout history, the creative in the arts has had a need however intermittent, to interact with other creatives. The deprivation of this essential interaction, is one that cannot be underestimated. Enter a new and wondrous technological tool.

Zoom to the rescue. A “Prince on a white horse”, a new way to interact and have personal contact with the many groups and venues and is a the path for artists to connect. The personal connection of face to face with another artist is there again, albeit, a much different way. Still, it is magical, real, and instant communication with another being that you can devour the day's need, and of future offerings that you have in common. Intense is this need for  communication with our peers, and with this new Zoom Prince, we are once more connected to our art world and beyond.

The Oceanside Museum of Art has had many events this past year that have been presented on line. While other venues are still shut, the Museum has carried on with dazzling programs and online openings of exhibitions. Please visit OMA and take in all of the current offerings, and revisit online the  many past exhibitions.

As this Year 2020 comes to a close, I have come to the realization that this year has given to me personally, resilience, self reliance, and overcoming the challenge of isolation. However the most gratifying gift of all is one, of taking into my world of art, a new and universal way to communicate with my art groups, colleagues, art institutions, and the essential peer interaction. So now on with it...Zoom forever...

The Covid -19 virus has altered our lives probably forever. All of the artists activities have been suspended for the time being. Hopefully, we will in the near future be able to have the First Friday Art Walks resumed, the Museum open, and the markets featuring the many articles and artist demonstrations that have made our Artists Alley world famous.

As an artist I find that it is confounding that there are not the interactions between our art groups that make us feel challenged, inspired, and give us opportunities to show our works. We work on in our studios, and the great outdoors which give us the energies that flow from the natural world of wonderments. The images that folks have of the artist in the upstairs garret as a lone creative force don't know that the interactions with other artists are the infusions of encouragement that keep the lone artist in the studio going with works of creativity.

I look forward the reopening of The Artists Alley Collective and the many other groups who inhabit this place which I could see great art events thriving, so long ago when I had the first gallery and studio in The Alley. I paint on, with the birdsong and the summer sunshine giving me succor and inspirations during this challenging time of this great American Challenge of sharing the responsibility and the courage to keep us safe.

Walking for the Arts of our Imaginations...

Due to the covid 19 disaster, I have not had art events to report about. I value all of your visits to this site about the Arts in the City of Oceanside CA. I have as many been walking my immediate neighborhood, and met many wonderful folks and their furry four pawed friends. As the weeks go by, I am meeting folks I did not know that they even lived here. This shows, that as we have in the past, not going out on a daily biases to exercise in a way that is free and has a positive impact on our neighborhood.

I have started a Neighborhood blog which is centered on Rancho Hermosa Oceanside. It is a retirement community of 55 and over. I'm among the most senior of age groups and it is wonderful to meet my younger new friends and their pups.

Art Walls for Students @ O'side Bakery

When I created the Art Walls program for the Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation in 2018, I had the vision that someday this program would be available for students of our Oceanside High Schools.

That dream came true last month when the ACE Studio and OCAF had a student exhibition from the El Camino High School. It was my great honor to meet and to become the owner of one of the paintings from this exhibition.

Hanna Russell, a truly remarkable young woman of great potential has created several Stippling Paintings for this show. It takes an incredible amount of time, talent, and passion to create this type of art work. Stippling has a long historical place in the world of fine art. It is like not other kind of painting as it is done with a pen and ink which it's self a challenge that is not for the faint of heart, but for those who has the passion of the vision in their mind's eye and the patience to just do it.

ABOUT THE ART & HOW IT’S PRESENTED:

 It is eclectic. My first love is abstract and impressionistic art, but I do representational art as well. I am especially moved by the local nature of California’s coast: the ocean with all of its changing light, majesty and beauty, coastal and tropical botanicals and palm silhouettes of all kinds.

It is about imagination and experimentation. Intentional camera movement technique (ICM) while shooting creates light paintings that are captured as I move the camera while taking the shot. Abstracts have also been shot inside of a mylar shopping bag or created from reflections in a puddle after the rain. A curling piece of bark becomes an ocean wave calling local surfers.  Agave Cacti become seascapes when turned on their sides.

It has a contemporary look.

I print my images on various substrates: on acrylic sheets; on large canvases finished with epoxy, or brushed aluminum gallery wraps.  All are very contemporary looks. On the metal wraps, the brushed aluminum shows through giving the images a depth and a metallic shimmer that I love. The canvas with epoxy is a gorgeous finish!   

ARTIST’S BIO:

I was born and raised in the spectacular natural beauty of Alaska. Nature and the environment still inform the work that I do as an artist today. I left as a young adult hungry for exposure to urban environments and the arts and culture they have to offer that I missed as a child. Currently, I live and create in Carlsbad, California near the Pacific Ocean. I am largely a self-taught artist and creative. When I retired from the workaday world in 2015, I experimented with a variety of media and eventually settled on digital photography and mixed media as my primary modes of expression. Using everyday experiences as a starting point, I directly respond to the present circumstance and moment, not knowing exactly what my camera lens will capture. It is with the alchemy of imagination, experimentation,  and editing that the visual gift emerges.

My work seeks to explore intimate and difficult subjects around which we thrive or die.
Diagnosed with stage IV prostate cancer in 2018 I picked up acrylic paint and canvas to hide
away my fear and anger, to cry out with great joy over newness and hope, and to express
abstractly how I was living out this disease. Perhaps it’s not a coincidence that I am a
passionate and emotional man, living with great faith in a world that eludes common sense.

“Cancer made me do it” is the best why for my work, and a miracle from God immersed me in a
world of color, texture and raw emotion that explains how. Each time I stand before a canvas I
am flooded with an awareness of our physical and spiritual journey, and my hands form the
paint and canvas to bring that awareness to the surface so that we can share and converse
over these most wondrous gifts.

Creating what I feel allows you to see my spiritual and emotional journey so that we might share
and come closer together. Painting immerses me in both my time and God’s time, and every
work expresses an abundance of truth about my life that I hope will cast light upon your own.

Born and raised in France, I moved to San Francisco at the age of 22, in search of adventure and broader horizons. As a child, I carried my father’s equipment while he filmed and photographed the places we visited in Europe. I have been traveling since, with a camera as my best friend.

I learned the intricacies of the darkroom with a San Francisco fashion photographer. I became familiar with the computer world while I worked as a Research Librarian at QUALCOMM. Since 1987, I have lived in Leucadia, a small beach town in North County San Diego.

In 2008, I started a project documenting how women were represented in different countries through the mannequins living behind store windows. It soon turned into an art form, as I used the reflections off the glass of the stores to create surreal, multi-layered images. I like to spend time in large cities here and abroad, walking in the streets, searching for their urban essence through architecture, street art, and store mannequins.

Cheryl Ehlers was raised in Europe, and currently resides in North County, Carlsbad, CA. Her creative process is reflective of mental imagery and emotions. She enjoys allowing the mind to take over the art during the process, capturing a flash in time that morphs a thought, and transforming it into art. Her works are bold, colorful and vary in styles. A majority of her art is published and she has painted for Independence Peace Day, “Silent Beauty”, United Nations, (UNESCO) Paris, FR; “Gator on the Bay”, San Diego, CA; “Sail into San Diego”; TICA; Cure for Cancer, Maui, HI.; “Reach for the Stars”, Auckland, NZ, and recently for The Ocean Agency, “Hypnotic Movements”, in support of programs protecting the coral reefs. Presently, working as an Arts Program Assistant for the City of Encinitas.

 Ehlers has a BA in Commercial Textile Design, Fashion Institute of Technology, Manhattan, NY. She has broad interests, and in 2009, she founded The Stardust Arts and had taught over 11,250 under-served youth the fundamentals of creative art. The program is solely funded by local grants and is recognized by the California State Assembly and the San Diego Board of Supervisors. She collectively has published chronicles on genealogy and biographical histories which are housed in public libraries in Texas, Georgia, Illinois, New York, The National Archives in Washington, DC, Wisconsin and New Zealand. (1997-2014).

She is a published visual artist, awarded recognition by the California State Assembly and the San Diego Board of Supervisors for her accomplishments in art in local communities (2009, 2010). In 2014 she was named Volunteer of the Year by the Encinitas 101 Mainstreet Association CA, for her curative efforts with the community emerging artists. She has been awarded numerous Visual Art grants, and continues to pursue her efforts to reach out and education the public on art. “Art at its best is creative, imaginative, and a valuable universal language”.

In viewing Fred Tomasellis's works the space in your mind will expand into a new and “Dislocated Reality”. Like looking into a vortex, one work has an unrelenting pull, physically drawing you ever closer to the work until, your are standing with your nose an inch from the painting. The detail of his works is seductive and a new exciting experience.

Rarely do I write about the exhibitions at our Oceanside Museum of Art, for writers far better than I do the reviews for our local publications. However, this time, I because of my great enchantment of his works, I happily dare to give this humble blog a heads up for our Local and International followers the chance to experience his work. The two YouTube videos will give a good overview of his works and more, to have a chance to hear and see his process in constructing art forms which will be new to most of you.

I have worked in resin, and know how deadly this medium can be. Using respirators is mandatory or as I did sometimes work underwater to take the deadly dust away. Never though, did I consider using a blowtorch to finish my sculptures. The heat raises the tiny bubbles in the resin so they will surface and dissipate with the finishing. So, I can relate in some small way to his process with the resin. The small pieces of illustrations of birds and leaves of the actual visual aspects are beyond my head-space to digest. The minute pieces of materials used are truly Mind-blowing.

The Art Walls O'side Project

Last Thursday evening was the premier of a new project of the Oceanside Cultural Foundation. The Art Walls O'side Project is an out reach to the East Side of Oceanside and beyond to share the Fine Arts created by our area Artists. So many are in our region without a gallery to exhibit their work. So many walls of possibility...

Our first Venue for this project is the O'Side Bakery in East Oceanside located at the intersection of El Camino Real and Mission Ave. Address is 3815 Mission Ave, suite 101. 760.305.9500.

The evening was graced indeed by the music of Robert Parker who has the magic hands at the piano that kept us all blissful with memories of today and yesterday.

Fine Art, Great taste treats, and happy music, can't beat that. Wouldn't even try...

Dear Friends and Colleagues

As we continue to celebrate Oceanside as a Cultural Arts City, the East side of Oceanside is beginning to have an art energy of its own. We who live and create in East Oceanside are energized by the new venues which are becoming a welcome harbinger of great things to come. The Heritage District has long been the center of our Cultural awareness, and for visitors a must see. The San Luis Rey Mission  and Heritage Park are the time honored center for our Visitors far and wide.   

As our City's Master Plan for the Arts becomes our guide for the future, one of the elements mentioned is to have venues for the Arts which are not necessarily traditional galleries.

To this end, The New O'side Bakery is presenting art on their walls for their patrons of good food. It is widely known that good food and art go together. So in June we are presenting the first of many openings for this upscale eatery.

STUDIO A.C.E.  A WINNING GRANTEE FROM THE OCEANSIDE CHARITABLE FOUNDATION

Julia Fister A Winner for the Arts and Education

Studio Ace received a 9000. grant from the Oceanside Charitable Foundation last night. Studio Ace will support the Community Arts Education Project with six Community projects this year. 

The Studio Ace is located next door to the East Oceanside Library. I first met Julia Fister when she was a volunteer at the Oceanside Museum of Art  in 2010. She was a glowing light for the Museum with her engaging personality and love of the Arts.

She then became the Director of Education for the Museum and was the originator of the Art Quest Program at OMA.  I was privileged to work with her for three years teaching the 5th Graders of our Oceanside Unified School District about making art in many different genres. She also presented the children historical insights about how the arts have changed over the years from the classical forms to the present digital arts we know in our everyday lives. 

Julia's new studio will be a guiding light for Children, Adults and schools in the East O'side and for our many diverse communities. Her door is always open. So, come by and welcome Julia to the place where the Arts and Education will grow and thrive...welcome Julia !!!

NEW DOORS ...THE VISION EXPANDS

A while back I wrote a lament about the many doors of Artists Alley closing to Artists. The rents for studios have skyrocketed out of sight in Downtown Oceanside and most probably will never return to the level that an Artist could afford to be in Artists Alley. The Dream of Artists Alley is now a beloved memory for most of us, and we will whenever possible return to take part in special events. Possibilities remain with the vision of sculptures along the side of the Alley. Perhaps in our new Master Plan for the Arts in Oceanside, this could be an element to which the muse of the alley could smile about...

Now as I hoped, a doors are opening in our Cultural Heritage District in East Oceanside. The Muramid Mural Museum is soon to open next door the the San Luis Rey Bakery and Restaurant near the Mission. Julia Fister has opened her new studio, Studio ACE next door to the East Oceanside Library. And another door will open in June at the new O'side Bakery on Old Mission Ave.

Studio Ace will open in June with the programming in the visual arts for kids, adults, and programs which will be off site. The Studio is located in the Mission Plaza Real next door to the Library. The area is one of our oldest sites of the valley ranches. The Davy Jones Ranch used to be at the corner of what is now Rt.76 and Douglas. This is where the white horse in many of my paintings used to live. The old buildings are still there. a testament to when the Valley was a quiet place of green hills and many livestock.

Our Heritage District is a treasure for our historical record. The San Luis Rey Mission, the Heritage Park, and is now the new site where our beloved Muramid Mural Museum is located. We are eagerly awaiting the reopening of this most colorful and art inspired place to work. Joanne Tawfilis has completely renovated the old house located next to the San Luis Bakery and Restaurant, the address: 480 North El Camino Real, Oceanside, CA 92058. 

One more door will open on June 14^th . The O'side Bakery located in the same center as Studio ACE will have their first opening for a fine art exhibition. Patrick N. Brown an artist of wondrous paintings will be our first exhibitor. The address is 3815 Mission Ave suite 101. The french pastries are my downfall...more treadmill work in my future.

A vision is building for the site of the closed Pacifica School in East Oceanside. Pacifica Farm a place where the vision is to grow good food, have healthy eating promoted with classes, a Farmers Market and quite possibly a place where performance can celebrate the fine art of the growing the good seeds of our lives.

More doors will open. The idea of an Art space in storage units is something to consider. The Bridge Storage in Richmond Ca has seen great success in attracting artists to these unique spaces, which in turn is building a new magnetic Art scene in the greater Richmond area...I see a lesson here.
