An Extraordinary Woman An accomplished Artist, and Incomparable Visionary for Peace. We are so privileged to have Joanne Tawfilis as creator of the Muramid Mural Museum  and Art Center here in Oceanside, who has  given to Oceanside and Artists Alley this beautiful space for Artists of All ages and all makers of Art.   It is our great privilege to call her Friend and Colleague. Congratulations Joanne, you deserve this Honor...We applaud !
Dr. Joanne Tawfilis

Cal State San Marcos will award three honorary degrees during commencement ceremonies May 19-20 and Joanne Tawfilis is among them!
The CSUSM Honorary Degree Committee, an advisory committee appointed by the president to represent the university community, considers nominations for an honorary degree. Any CSUSM students, faculty, staff, alumni and the greater community may suggest potential honorary degree recipients to the committee.
Nominees must be distinguished in their respective fields, and the eminence of persons nominated must be widely recognized.
The CSU Board of Trustees makes the final determination and awards the degrees in the categories it considers most appropriate. (Joanne is being honored with a degree in Fine Arts!)
Tawfilis, who has partnered with CSUSM on numerous projects, has dedicated her life to promoting peace through art. She will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts during the 9 a.m. College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral and Social Sciences ceremony on Friday, May 19.
Tawfilis spent most of her career as a United Nations executive and is a former director of the Women of Srebrenica Project in the former Yugoslavia. Her work took her to Bosnia in the mid-1990s, which proved to be a life-changing experience.
During her time in Bosnia, Tawfilis volunteered for a few hours several times a week facilitating art lessons at a local orphanage. Working with 350 orphans from the war-torn country, she used the only materials available – a 10-gallon can of white wall paint and bed sheets riddled with bullet holes – to create canvases for the children to paint murals.
That experience led to the creation of the Art Miles Mural Project, which works with schools throughout the world to help incorporate art into curriculum. The Art Miles Mural Project has facilitated the completion of more than 5,000 murals painted by more than 500,000 participants from 125 countries.
The project has grown to include a permanent space for the Muramid Mural Museum and Art Center in Oceanside.
Tawfilis has been a speaker for CSUSM’s Arts & Lectures Series and led a project for students after the Sandy Hook tragedy to create 14 murals that were displayed in the Connecticut Capitol building. She has also facilitated mural paintings for many University events, including Discover CSUSM Day and Voices for Hope Suicide Prevention Week.

Cinco de Mayo Art Walk Oceanside Art Waves ...

A celebration of spring for Oceanside art patrons, Artists and Visitors. Usually May is gray, but not this year, warm and with the City Plaza fountains in their glory, we had a wonderful trip in the Art Circle for Oceanside's walk for the Arts.

Starting at the Oceanside Museum of Art, we found a surfboard like no other. It was in iridescent blues, violets and greens. Made entirely with recycled DVDs it shone in the evening light like an ocean gem washed up on the beach, but of course ending up at OMA. Created by Kathleen Ossiander, , she was delightful in her telling the story of how she had these old DVDs with no function,  http://www.oceansideartwalk.org/artists/kathleen-ossiander  had an epiphany... A mosaic!...so it happened a jewel of a surfboard. Of course it does not belong standing up in the sand, but I being a romantic see it there...giving the old disposables bringing a functioning life masquerading as a newborn surfboard springing from the Sea.

From there we made our way to Mary and Joe's new location of their Oceanside Art Gallery at 717 Mission Ave # C , http://oceansideartgallery.com/. As always they had delicious treats with wine. An artist who is unique in her work, Blake Kern was there with her original art. http://www.oceansideartwalk.org/artists/blake-kern
My friends bought one one her one of a kind constructions to send to New York. Oceanside Art is getting around...New York even...! Congratulations Blake.
Blake and her magic art works
We then walked downhill to Artists Alley. The crowds were large and happy in the celebration of the night. Energy flowed as did the refreshments. Music was in the air and dancing vibrations filled my tired old body.

Entering the Muramid Mural Museum, we found that the space was entirely filled with the party atmosphere and the Art Works were indeed to be admired 3 of which were sold. Joanne Tawfilis was the energy at the center of this incredible space for Art. Artists Alley has a long history of ups and downs, but Joanne has taken this old space and transformed it into The First Mural Museum in the World and in doing so brought International art and acclaim to Oceanside. http://muramidmuseum.com/

Leaving the Muramid, we walked down the hall and found a brand new Wine Tasting Room in the Art Building. A first for the Art Building and a nice change of pace from the Craft Beer scene. We did have our taste with the Holme Estate Cellars. http://www.holmeestatecellars.com/ They do have a fine offering. Craig Holem gave us a warm welcome and did the pouring. Located at 216 N. Coast Hwy, the space is very upscale in decor and we found the tasting exceptional.

All in all a delightful way to spend a Friday Night and we will be eager to see what comes next in June, so join us and you too might find a treasure to take home and bring some Art Waves into your life...
